Goa celebrated the 34th ‘Rashtramanytai Dis’ on August 20, marking 34 years since Konkani was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India in 1992, giving it Constitutional recognition. The Goa Konkani Akademi organised the celebrations at Goa University, Taleigao, with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant calling for greater efforts to promote, strengthen and further develop the language.
Speaking at the special function, CM Sawant said that while Konkani has achieved significant milestones over the past three decades, much more needs to be done to ensure its continued growth, particularly in the literary field.

The Chief Minister noted that Konkani is included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, is used in Parliament and is accessible through digital platforms. However, he said the language has not progressed as much as it should have and called for more dedicated efforts towards its development.
CM Sawant also urged the youth to move beyond the perception that English alone leads to success. He emphasised that proficiency in Konkani can help bring clarity of thought and understanding of concepts while encouraging younger generations to remain connected with their language.
Government Expanding Konkani in Official Work
Highlighting the government’s efforts, Sawant said the Directorate of Official Language has translated 15 Acts into Konkani and is now issuing government notifications in the language.
He said such steps would help expand the use of Konkani in official communication and strengthen its presence in public administration.

Konkani Vaishwik Bhavan to Become a Reality
The Chief Minister also announced that the government will soon make the Konkani Vaishwik Bhavan, or Konkani World Centre, in Goa a reality.
CM Sawant said the government would support the required infrastructure, while literary figures associated with Konkani would have an important role in driving the centre’s core initiatives and activities.
Awards Honour Contributions to Konkani
The celebrations also featured the presentation of the Konkani Sahitya and Bhasha Seva Puraskar 2025-26. Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant presented the awards recognising contributions to Konkani language and literature.
The CM also witnessed the signing of an MoU between the Gujarat Sahitya Academy and Goa Konkani Akademi, in the presence of senior officials and literary figures.
The 34th ‘Rashtramanytai Dis’ celebration highlighted Konkani’s Constitutional journey while also underlining the need for continued efforts to strengthen the language among readers, writers, government institutions and the younger generation.
